The final episode of Merlin plays heavily on Arthur and Merlin’s friendship, shattered in a single moment of honesty, with Arthur struggling to understand his servant’s revelation, whilst Merlin continues to tend to the injured King. The humour returned but wasn’t overdone, the relationship between Merlin and Arthur grew, and the introduction of the Knights of the Round Table, while underused, increased an already impressive cast.

Each episode has been an achievement in storytelling, with few stories that didn’t drive forward the overall story arc.
MERLIN SEASON 5 EPISODE 1 DAILYMOTION SERIES
With series five, it filled those shoes admirably. In effect, Merlin had big shoes to fill – it was the series that ran when Doctor Who, which had also developed a more grown-up feel in the past few years, wasn’t on our screen. With series four and five, Merlin really hit its stride, with darker, more grown-up story telling that benefitted from a later time slot and the departure of the played-for-laughs Robin Hood series from our screens. It’s been a rollercoaster of a series, with some truly disappointing episodes and humour that, at time, was a disastrous misstep, especially in the first season. The King is dead… Long live the Queen as we discover that, in the future, Merlin still walks the Earth. The dragon warns Merlin that there is nothing he can do, calling Arthur the Once and Future King and that when Camelot’s need is greatest, Arthur will rise again.Ĭasting Excalibur back into the lake, Merlin places the King upon a funeral boat, ready to send him across the lake to his final resting place. In fury, Merlin calls upon the Grand Dragon, asking him to carry them to Avalon. With no horses, Arthur tells Merlin that it is too late and tells him that he knows that Merlin was working for the Kingdom of Camelot, before he slips away in his servants hands. When she finally catches up with them both, Morgana looks set to kill both the King and Merlin, but is killed by Merlin’s own blade – also forged from the breath of a dragon. After being informed by Elizabeth and Hawk about the ongoing battle, King executes a surprise attack from behind through Ban to strike Guila. With Arthur weakening, Merlin must use subterfuge and trickery to get the King to his destination, unaware of Morgana’s approach.

Elaine, first unseen to King, releases Ban from petrification with a kiss, allowing him to join Meliodas and Diane in the battle against Guila, while Elaine tells King to understand Ban and save him. In the present, a Holy Knight named Guila enters the Capital of the Dead, battling Meliodas and Diane while Elizabeth and Hawk run away to safety. Elaine then sacrificed her life by ingesting the Fountain of Youth and feeding its power to him through a kiss, allowing Ban to attain immortality and kill the red demon. Ban has another flashback where he and Elaine grew close and fell in love, but the two were severely injured while confronting a red demon rampaging the Fairy King's Forest.

Glimpsing Elaine, Ban runs towards her but is petrified by King in the process, who seeks revenge on him after overhearing rumours that Elaine's death was caused by him, and revealing that she was his younger sister.

Meanwhile, King, the bearer of the Grizzly's Sin of Sloth, is shown to be allied with Gilthunder and the rest of the Holy Knights.īan's memory of Elaine unlocks the door, allowing them to enter the Capital of the Dead, an empty world surrounded by neon green crystals. The six of them regroup back at Dalmary Town, where Dana, who survived the attack, treats them to a meal as courtesy. Meliodas, Hawk, Diane and Elizabeth, who is being carried in Diane's bag, infiltrate Baste Dungeon to rescue Sennett, and find Ban wandering around the prison as well with no sign of having been injured, causing the dungeon's collapse during their happy reunion and breaking a secret barrier that Golgius set up in the process. However, as Ruin reveals his true identity, he realises that Elizabeth was going for the bell on his staff the whole time, successfully freeing Meliodas and Diane from the spell to defeat Ruin and Friesia respectively. As Meliodas and Diane continue to fight each other under hypnosis, the fourth and final member of Weird Fangs, Friesia, attacks the disguised Ruin with her insects, prompting Elizabeth to risk her life to protect him.
